A method to assess algicidal activity of microalgal extracts coupling microalgae produced in stirred closed photobioreactor operating in continuous with pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry ArchiMer
Menguy, Eva; Dumontet, Vincent; Coulombier, Noémie; Meriot, Vincent; Le Dean, Loic; Barthelemy, Vanille; Jauffrais, Thierry.
We describe in the present study a quick and reliable method based on chlorophyll a fluorescence to assess putative algicidal effect of different microalgal extracts. We couple microalgal production under chemostat cultivation mode to continuously produce a given microalgae species (e.g. Dunaliella salina in this study) at a stable physiological state to ease comparison between extracts tested; with a non-destructive method based on chlorophyll a fluorescence. Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry was used to assess over time the effect of different microalgal crude extracts on the efficiency of the photosystem II (PSII) of a tested microalgae (Dunaliella salina). • Microalgal production at stationary phase in stirred closed photobioreactor (PBR)...

Chemical stress reduces the lateral shoot growth in vernalized garlic Horticultura Brasileira
Gabriel,André; Resende,Juliano TV; Marodin,Josué C; Matos,Rafael de; Zeist,André R; Maciel,Cleber Daniel G.
ABSTRACT Brazil’s low garlic productivity is attributed, mainly to the lateral shoot growth, a physiological anomaly characterized by early lateral shoot growth of cloves in noble group garlic cultivars. Considering the aforementioned information, the aim was to evaluate the occurrence of lateral shoot growth and productivity characteristics in garlic plants, cv. Chonan, subject to herbicide chemical stress. In order to do so, an experiment was conducted in outlining randomized blocks in a 3x5 factorial scheme, constituted by three herbicides (paraquat 500 g ha-1; ammonium gluphosinate 400 g ha-1 and glyphosate 720 g ha-1) and five subdoses (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of the minimum recommended dose of each herbicide). The electron transport rates (ETR) were...

SILVEIRA,R.R.; SANTOS,M.V.; FERREIRA,E.A.; SANTOS,J.B.; SILVA,L.D..
ABSTRACT Different doses of herbicides can promote a differentiated physiological response in grasses of the same genus. This study has been proposed in order to evaluate physiological responses of B. ruziziensis and B. decumbens submitted to glyphosate and fluazifop-p-butyl. Treatments were distributed in a 2 x 6 factorial design with five repetitions, being two grasses: B. decumbens cv. Basilisk and B. ruziziensis with six doses of herbicides: 0.00; 0.25; 0.50; 1.00; 1.5 and 2.00 times the commercial dose recommended by manufacturers. At 7, 15, 21, and 30 days after herbicide application (DAA) chlorophyll luminous energy uptake efficiency was evaluated. Plants subjected to glyphosate at 7 days after application (DAA) showed minimum fluorescence of 270...

Chlorophyll fluorescence in guanandi tree (Calophyllum brasiliense) after herbicide application Planta Daninha
ARALDI,R.; CORNIANI,N.; TROPALDI,L.; GIROTTO,M.; BELAPART,D.; SIMÕES,P.S.; VELINI,E.D..
Chlorophyll fluorescence is currently used as a rapid diagnostic and nondestructive method to detect and quantify damage on the photosynthetic apparatus of leaves on weeds, crops and ornamental/coniferous trees in response to both environmental stress and herbicides. This study aimed to evaluate chlorophyll fluorescence in guanandi plants (Calophyllum brasiliense) after application of different postemergence herbicides. The experiment was performed in a completely randomized design, with six treatments (control, bentazon, sulfentrazone, isoxaflutole, atrazine and glyphosate) and five replications. The herbicide treatments were applied with a stationary sprayer, and electron transport rate (ETR) was subsequently analyzed with OS5p Multi-Mode Chlorophyll...

Dynamics of phytoplankton productivity and exopolysaccharides (EPS and TEP) pools in the Seine Estuary (France, Normandy) over tidal cycles and over two contrasting seasons ArchiMer
Morelle, Jerome; Schapira, Mathilde; Claquin, Pascal.
Exopolysaccharides (EPS) play an important role in the carbon flux and may be directly linked to phytoplankton and microphytobenthos production, most notably in estuarine systems. However the temporal and spatial dynamics of estuarine EPS are still not well understood, nor how primary productivity triggers this variability at these different scales. The aim of this study was to investigate the primary productivity of phytoplankton and EPS dynamics in the Seine estuary over a tidal cycle in three different haline zones over two contrasted seasons. The other objectives was to investigate the origin of pools of soluble carbohydrates (S-EPS) and transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) in phytoplankton, microphytobenthos or other compartments. High frequency...

Growth, phenology and chlorophyll fluorescence of habanero pepper ( Capsicum chinense Jacq.) under water stress conditions Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Pérez-Gutiérrez,Alfonzo; Garruña,René; Vázquez,Pedro; Latournerie-Moreno,Luis; Andrade,José Luis; Us-Santamaría,Roberth.
Abstract: The irrigation methods offer a good alternative for increasing water use efficiency. The main purpose of this study was to identify the best irrigation level for Habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) plants based on available water capacity (AWC) of substrate. An experiment carried out with three irrigation levels (20, 40 and 60% of AWC) and five genotypes (H225, H241, H244, H226 and Jaguar). The irrigation level of 20% decreased the soil water potential to cause water stress in plants. At an irrigation level of 40%, average jaguar plant height (92 cm) and H241 (79 cm), genotypes were greater than under the other treatments. Average leaf area of H225, H241 and H244 plants was at least 48% greater than Jaguar plants. Average total dry matter...

Responses of Conocarpus lancifolius to environmental stress: a case study in the semi-arid land of Kuwait Phyton
Redha,A; Suleman,P; Al-Hasan,R; Afzal,M.
Cococarpus lancifolius Engl. grows wild in Djibouti, Somalia and East Africa, and South Asia. The species was introduced into Kuwait, where it is exposed to several stresses: oil pollution, salinity, high temperature and harsh climatic conditions. These conditions are prevalent in its semi-arid environment. In this study, the impact of salinity (2, 6 and 10%), temperature (20, 30 and 40 °C), polyethylene glycol (10, 30 and 60%) and drought has been investigated on C. lancifolius. Proline (Pro) accumulation (5.5 ± 0.03 µg/g dry weight; p=0.05-0.005), protein (16.47 ± 0.052 mg/g; p=0.001), free amino acids (10.92 ± 0.082 mg/g; p=0.006) and lipids (116.05 ± 2.17 µg/g; p=0.05) were measured in plants irrigated with 60% polyethylene glycol (PEG) for 6 days....

Selectivity of Herbicides Inhibitors of Photosystem II for Sugarcane Cultivars Planta Daninha
SIMÕES,P.S.; CARBONARI,C.A.; NASCENTES,R.F.; STASIEVSKI,A.; VELINI,E.D..
ABSTRACT For the successful execution of chemical weed control in sugarcane crop, the selectivity of herbicides is a factor of great importance to maximize crop yield. Each cultivar may respond differently to the same herbicide in the same dose, and selectivity is not only determined by the visual presence or absence of phytotoxicity. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of herbicides amicarbazone, tebuthiuron, and diuron + hexazinona on the electron transport rate in photosystem II (ETR), along with the development and yield of sugarcane cultivars RB867515, CTC 4, CTC 9, and CTC 17 in greenhouse, and field conditions. Under greenhouse conditions ETR was assessed by a portable fluorometer, aa well as dry weight and phytotoxicity of the...
